Short-chain peptides that occur in the nervous system as signalling molecules, or are derived from them. In the lab they are used in neurobiological models and receptor studies.

About Neuropeptides

Neuropeptides occur as signalling substances in the nervous system or are derived from them. Selank is a heptapeptide derived from the tetrapeptide tuftsin. Semax is a heptapeptide made of the fragment ACTH(4-7) and the sequence Pro-Gly-Pro. DSIP consists of nine amino acids, VIP of 28. P-21 is a peptidomimetic derived from CNTF.

Selank and Semax also come in N-acetylated versions. The acetyl group at the N-terminus protects against breakdown by aminopeptidases and raises the molecular mass by 42 g/mol. In the sequence it appears as "Ac-". When checking against the certificate of analysis, the calculated mass must include this modification.

Most neuropeptides in this area are short and dissolve well in water. Nearly all come as a lyophilisate and as a solution in a spray bottle. VIP is much longer and more sensitive to oxidation and aggregation.

Common questions

What is the difference between Semax and N-acetyl Semax?

N-acetyl Semax carries an acetyl group at the N-terminus. The sequence is otherwise the same, and the molecular mass is about 42 g/mol higher.

Are Selank and Semax related?

Both are heptapeptides ending in Pro-Gly-Pro. Selank derives from tuftsin, Semax from the fragment ACTH(4-7). The data comparison shows both side by side.

Do these peptides dissolve in water?

The short, charged sequences usually do. Still test a small portion first and check that the solution is clear.
