Benzyl alcohol
The preservative in bacteriostatic water, usually at 0.9%. It can interfere in sensitive cell experiments, where sterile water without additives is the better choice.
In the lab
Benzyl alcohol absorbs UV light and shows as its own peak in an HPLC chromatogram. Ultrapure water therefore suits analytical samples better.
