Hygroscopic
Taking up water from the air. Lyophilisates are strongly hygroscopic. That is why a cold vial should reach room temperature before opening, so no moisture condenses.
In the lab
Working quickly, dry air and tightly sealed vials reduce water uptake. For longer storage a desiccant in the container helps.
