Counterion

The ion that balances the charge of a peptide salt, such as trifluoroacetate or acetate. Counterions count towards the weighed mass but not towards the peptide.

In the lab

Every positively charged group binds a counterion. Strongly basic peptides therefore carry more counterion and often have a lower peptide content.
